Just finished a beautiful, tough, and long section

Just finished a beautiful, tough, and long section of the trail. With very few exceptions, villages disappear and you only find mountain refuges.

“The bathroom opens at 1:00.” “We don’t make bocadillos.” “You need to leave the table in 15 minutes.” “We are out of salad. And desserts too (at lunchtime).” “Bocadillo de tortilla: €12.” “The kitchen opens at 10:00.” “If you want a bocadillo for dinner, you had to ask before 7:00.”

I slept in my tent every night and never stayed in the refuges, but I stopped by every time to get some food.
The staff was always very nice, but these answers show exactly what happens to the mountains when they rightfully get crowded with too many people and mass tourism.

Prices are high and strangely the same everywhere, even though some refuges are right on the road and others can only be reached by helicopter. Rigid schedules, no flexibility, tiny portions, mediocre quality, and a cold, sanitized, impersonal vibe that feels like a cookie-cutter Sunday trip.

The only wonderful exception was Refugio de Estós: my first delicious plate of beans after a month, a piece of banana bread big enough to feed a hungry hiker, and a relaxed, genuine, true mountain atmosphere.

I met:

✌🏻 A group of 16 Taiwanese hikers who had come all the way to Spain to hike the GR11. Every inch of skin was covered or carefully protected. They never seemed to struggle. Always cheerful. Never sweating. They somehow always smelled fresh. Most of them were retired, yet looked twenty years younger. Every photo featured the same pose: one leg kicked up, peace sign, big smile.

👫 A young Danish couple. Gorgeous and sharp, just like the Danish stereotype.

🥾 A Dutch couple on their first long distance hike.

👨🏼‍🏫 A university professor leading a group of students.
- “Excuse me, do you speak English?” I asked.
- “We’re English.”
- “Do you think I can cut through here, or is it too steep?”
- “We’re geologists. Let me show you the detailed topo maps.”

My tree, then, cannot be a bare list of names. It must become a map of influences, including every conditioning factor. It must be both genetic and epigenetic, incorporating the genes and their triggers.

6 giorni in Friuli, tra Udine e Prealpi Carniche. Appunti:

- Le dolomiti “dimenticate”: la bellezza delle dolomiti senza il turismo delle dolomiti. Il Friuli è un po’ come il Molise.
- “Sputare pallini” è un modo di dire che si presta parecchio a queste montagne. Tanto dislivello su brevi distanze.
- Il cane procione esiste ed è stato avvistato in Friuli.
- Backgammon non è divertente. Machiavelli sempre.
- Al bar di Cimolais, se arrivate troppo tardi, potreste non trovare il pane. E se per caso somigliate a Francesco potreste essere avvicinati da un uomo che vi crede Francesco. Parlateci che altrimenti ci rimane male.
- Se andate “da Pozzo” a Udine a fare un aperitivo non chiedete la cioccolata calda.
- Non so dove si nascondano i Friulani, ma non li trovate in giro per strada.
- Grazie a chi ha lasciato i biscotti Digestive, le barrette di Decathlon e il mix di anacardi e noccioline al bivacco Marchi Granzotto.
- Diamo credito a Facebook quando funziona.
- Il PCT, oltre alla fame, continua a dare i suoi frutti: Paolo, Cristina, e Giovanni.

With Titus, we talked about the fruits and thorns of marriage, rites of passage, sharing, and of course, home. His house even has an extra room, just in case one day you feel like trying another life.

There’s a cliché that always gets under my skin. That opening legal crossings, making borders more porous, automatically leads to a mass exodus from the Global South. It’s the prejudice of people obsessed with money, as if it were the only guiding light. As if every choice, every life, revolved around a single number.

So I ask Titus: you’ve always lived in Namibia. Have you ever dreamed of living elsewhere?

“Visiting another place for a few days? Sure, no problem. Dreaming of living elsewhere? No, never. I want to stay in Namibia because I’m proud of my country, its people, its wildlife, its culture, and its laws.”

I was struck by the spare prose and the honesty with which Roxane Gay exposes herself. She never overstates a moment, not even the darkest ones. Nor does she shy away from what might be seen as contradictions. And I kept thinking about the courage it takes to publish something so personal today, when showing your wounds leaves you more vulnerable than ever to judgment and unsolicited advice.

In the “Reading Rooms” section, I let the books that speak of Home do the talking.
