Falles on the Pyrenees

Summer nights turn orange

The falles

A collective infrastructure of fire, an annual mobilization that marks the summer solstice across more than sixty mountain communities in the Pyrenees.

How do they work

As night falls, people carry handmade wooden torches down steep peaks, forming a single line of light. Once they reach the valley, the “fallaires” toss their flames into a central, mesmerizing bonfire.

By custom, the burden of lighting the peak and guiding the descent through the dark falls to the last man married in the village that year.

Music

Once the torches are thrown into the central bonfire, traditional dances and concerts take over the village square.
